Choosing a Card Grading Company From South Africa (2026)

By Mitchell Taljaard · · Updated

Five card grading companies compared for South African collectors: PCG, PSA, CGC, TAG and Beckett

This guide compares five graders South African Pokémon collectors weigh up: PCG, PSA, CGC, TAG and Beckett. They all seal your card in a tamper-evident slab with a grade from 1 to 10. They differ in price, waiting time, what the label shows and how easy they are to reach from here.

This guide compares all five on the things that matter from South Africa. That means rand costs with import charges, realistic turnaround, subgrades, top grades, resale and how you actually get your cards to each grader.

We're Cuppas Cards, a PCG submission service for South African Pokémon collectors. We don't grade cards ourselves: PCG assigns every grade. So we have a side in this. Every figure for another grader comes from its own published pages or a named source, checked on 19 October 2026. Where another grader is the better choice, we say so.

Dollar figures are converted at R16.46 to the dollar (Trading Economics, 19 October 2026). PCG's R325 is our quoted rand price for its £15 fee. Each grader's figures are sourced in the sections below and in our one-to-one comparisons.

What does each grader cost from South Africa?

For one card or a few, PCG through Cuppas Cards is the cheapest per card once you count getting it to the grader and back. It's the only price in this guide that already includes the international courier.

The grading fee is only part of the cost. From South Africa you also pay to ship cards to the grader and back, and import charges when the slabs return. We estimate import charges at 20% duty plus 15% VAT, which adds about 35% to the grading fee. For PCG, that's R98 on the R280 grading value we declare. It's our own estimate, and the actual charge depends on how customs values your parcel.

PSA, $59.99 StandardAbout R990About R1,335Shipping, insurance, any middleman fee
Beckett, $79.95 ExpressAbout R1,316About R1,777Shipping to Beckett and back

For PCG, a card declared at R1,000 comes to R623 at checkout, including insurance. Our cost breakdown shows every rand of that.

TAG's figures come from its pricing page. Two cheaper options exist on paper. CGC's $17 Bulk tier is about R280, but it needs at least 25 cards (CGC services and fees). Beckett lists Base and Standard tiers from $14.95, but they showed as sold out on 19 October 2026 (Beckett grading).

The common mistake is comparing grading fees alone. A low dollar fee can still cost more once a courier to the US and back is added, especially for one or two cards. For 25 or more cards on CGC Bulk, about R378 each with import charges, shared shipping could bring CGC closer.

How long does each grader take?

Of each grader's cheapest open tier, Beckett's $79.95 Express is quickest, at 15 business days. PCG is the fastest of the cheaper options, and CGC's and PSA's cheapest tiers are the slowest.

Grader and tierQuoted grading timeRoughly

Beckett Express ($79.95)15 business days3 weeks
TAG Base ($39.95)60 business days3 months
PSA Standard ($59.99)90 to 100 business days4 to 4.5 months
CGC Bulk ($17)150 working days7 months

These are grading times only. Shipping to the grader and back adds more.

PCG UK quotes 4 to 6 weeks on its £15 Standard tier for direct submissions (PCG UK pricing). As a PCG partner, our batches are promised about 30 days at PCG. From South Africa, we expect slabs back about 40 days after a batch ships. Our first batch is still out, so that's an expectation, not a track record yet.

PSA's Standard orders are graded after its existing Value and Bulk backlog (Sports Illustrated Collectibles, 9 September 2026). CGC and TAG both say their turnaround times are estimates and not guaranteed. Beckett says its times are estimated and subject to change.

Faster tiers exist at most graders, at a price. PSA Express is $199 for 20 to 30 business days (Sports Illustrated Collectibles). CGC Standard is $55 for 10 working days (CGC services and fees). TAG Express is $149.95 for 10 business days (TAG pricing).

Can you send cards to each grader from South Africa?

Of the five, only PCG through us has a rand-priced route with the international courier included. Beckett takes international orders directly. The others need a middleman, a partner or your own courier arrangements.

  • PCG. You order on our site, pay in rands, and post your cards to us or drop them off at our booth at Cape Town shows. We send them to PCG in the UK in pooled batches.
  • PSA. We couldn't find a PSA submission route set up for South Africa. PSA opened a grading centre in Frankfurt in September 2026, aimed at European collectors (Sports Illustrated Collectibles). Many South Africans use a local middleman, which adds its own fees (Rocket Grunt TCG, February 2026).
  • CGC. CGC's published fees are for direct submissions to its US facility. You'd arrange the courier there and back yourself.
  • TAG. TAG only accepts direct orders from the US and Canada. Everyone else must go through an authorised partner in Canada, the UK, Australia or Hong Kong (TAG help centre).
  • Beckett. Beckett says it serves international customers, with shipping and insurance calculated from the address on your account (Beckett grading FAQ).

Which graders give subgrades?

PCG and Beckett print four subgrades on the slab label: centering, corners, edges and surface. TAG gives eight in an online report. PSA's standard labels show one overall grade, and CGC's fee page doesn't list subgrades.

Subgrades tell you why a card got its grade. A 9 with a 10 for corners and an 8.5 for centering tells a very different story from a 9 with worn corners.

  • PCG prints four subgrades on every Standard-tier label. Our guide to PCG grades explains how they combine.
  • Beckett prints four subgrades on every tier except its $14.95 Base option.
  • TAG gives eight subgrades, front and back for each category, in an online report you open from the slab's QR code. They come only on its $59.95 Standard tier and above (TAG help centre).
  • PSA standard labels show one overall grade without subgrades (PreGradeCards).
  • CGC's current services and fees page doesn't list a subgrade service.

If you want to see subgrades by just looking at the slab, PCG and Beckett are the two options. PCG costs far less from South Africa.

How do the top grades compare?

All five use a 1 to 10 scale, but they name and split the top grade differently.

GraderTop gradeFront centering for the top grade
PCGFlawless 10, then Pristine 10 and Gem Mint 1050/50
BeckettBlack Label Pristine 10, then Gold Label Pristine 1050/50 for Black Label
TAGPristine 10, then Gem Mint 10 and Mint 10Generally 51/49 or better for Pristine
CGCPristine 10, then Gem Mint 1050/50 for Pristine
PSAGem Mint 10About 55/45 or better

Sources: PCG grading standards, Beckett grading scale, TAG help centre, CGC grading scale and PSA grading standards.

A PSA 10 and a PCG Gem Mint 10 aren't the same thing. PSA's Gem Mint 10 is its highest grade, with centering up to about 55/45 on the front and 75/25 on the back. PCG's Gem Mint 10 is its third level of 10, and it allows minor imperfections in two subgrades. So when you compare sold prices, check which 10 a listing actually is, not just the number on the label.

TAG works differently again. It scores cards out of 1000 on its Standard tier and above, and a score of 990 to 1000 is its Gem Mint 10 (TAG grading scale). TAG has no 9.5.

Which slabs sell for more?

PSA slabs usually sell for the most, and that's PSA's main advantage. Collector price guides put a PSA 10 above a CGC 10, though estimates vary widely.

  • PokemonPriceTracker puts a modern PSA 10 at 5% to 10% over a CGC 10, and vintage at 20% to 30% (PokemonPriceTracker, April 2026).
  • PreGradeCards puts a PSA 10 at 10% to 30% over a CGC 10 (PreGradeCards, September 2026).

Neither source explains its method in detail. We haven't found reliable public sales data for PCG, TAG or Beckett slabs against each other, so we won't rank those three on resale.

The premium only pays off on valuable cards. A 10% premium on a R500 card is R50, which won't cover PSA's higher fees. On a R20,000 card, it's R2,000, and PSA may well be worth it. Before you choose, check recent sold prices for your card in each grader's slab. Our guide to PSA resale value shows where PSA's premium breaks even.

Which grader suits which collector?

Match the grader to what you want from the card. There isn't one best grader for every card.

  • Grading your own collection, one card or a handful: PCG through Cuppas Cards. It's the lowest cost per card, ordered in rands, with subgrades printed on the label.
  • A high-value card you plan to sell: PSA, for its resale premium. Budget at least R1,335 a card plus shipping and middleman fees.
  • A near-perfect card chasing the highest label: Beckett for a Black Label, or PCG for a Flawless 10. Our pre-grading checklist helps you judge whether a card is close.
  • 25 or more cards and your own shipping route to the US: CGC's Bulk tier, if you can wait about seven months.
  • You want a 1000-point score and a detailed online flaw report: TAG, if one of its partners accepts your cards.

You can also mix graders: PSA for the one big chase card, PCG for everything else.
