What Card Grading Costs From South Africa in 2026 (All-In)
By Mitchell Taljaard · · Updated

Most grading price lists are in dollars or pounds and stop at the grading fee. From South Africa, that's only part of the bill. Shipping to the UK, customs, VAT, insurance and local delivery all add up.
We're Cuppas Cards, and we send South African cards to PCG (Premier Card Grading) in the UK. We don't grade cards ourselves: PCG assigns every grade. This post shows every rand you'll pay, line by line, using our real prices.
What's in the price of grading one card?
Every card costs R495 for the service, plus customs, VAT and insurance. Here's each charge and where it comes from:
| Charge | Amount | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Grading fee | R325 | PCG's £15 per-card fee |
| DHL round trip | R170 | Your card's share of one R8,500 DHL trip to the UK and back, split across a 50-card batch |
| Customs and VAT | About R98 | An estimated 20% duty plus 15% VAT on the R280 grading value |
| Insurance | 3% of declared value | DHL cover on both international legs |
| Postage to us | About R70 per parcel | Pudo locker to door, which you arrange |
| Delivery back | From R60 per parcel, or free | Pudo locker to locker, DHL door to door from R250, or free collection |
| Re-sleeve fee | R50 per card, only if needed | Cards that arrive loose, in toploaders or badly packed |
The first four lines are paid at checkout. Postage to us is paid to your courier. Delivery back is billed when your order is complete. Customs, insurance and the re-sleeve fee are explained in our customs, insurance and shipping terms.
How much does it cost in practice?
A single card declared between R500 and R5,000 costs about R740 to R870 all-in, including postage both ways. The cost per card drops when you send several cards in one parcel, because postage is per parcel, not per card.
These examples use Pudo both ways: about R70 to send your parcel to us and R60 to get it back.
| Example | Grading, DHL, customs | Insurance | Postage both ways | Total | Per card |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 card declared at R500 | R593 | R15 | R130 | R738 | R738 |
| 1 card declared at R1,000 | R593 | R30 | R130 | R753 | R753 |
| 1 card declared at R5,000 | R593 | R150 | R130 | R873 | R873 |
| 5 cards declared at R800 each | R2,965 | R120 | R130 | R3,215 | R643 |
If you collect your slabs in person, take R60 off each total.
Why does a valuable card cost more?
Insurance is the only charge that grows with the card's value. It's 3% of what you declare. That's 1% for the trip to the UK and 1% of double the value for the trip home, once the card is graded (our insurance terms).
A claim pays out on your declared value, so don't under-declare to save a few rand. Declaring a R5,000 card at R1,000 saves R120 but leaves R4,000 uninsured on the way out, and more on the way home.
One more thing for valuable slabs: our DHL cover ends when your slabs get back to us. Pudo's cover on the final delivery is capped at R1,500, so collecting in person is the safest choice for high-value cards.
What don't you pay for?
You don't pay for an overseas account, a foreign currency card or international shipping arranged on your own. You also don't fill in customs paperwork. We handle the export to the UK and the import back, and the estimated customs and VAT are included at checkout.
The rand price is fixed when you pay. If the pound moves while your cards are at PCG, what you paid doesn't change.
How does this compare to PSA from South Africa?
PCG through Cuppas Cards is cheaper per card than PSA's cheapest open tier. PSA's Standard tier costs $59.99 a card (Sports Illustrated Collectibles, September 2026). At R16.46 to the dollar (Trading Economics, 19 October 2026), that's about R990 for grading alone.
If the same estimated 20% duty and 15% VAT apply when the slab comes home, that adds about R345. So budget at least R1,335 a card for PSA, before shipping, insurance and any middleman fees.
PSA slabs often sell for more, so the higher cost can make sense for a very valuable card. Our PCG vs PSA comparison covers resale value and turnaround in detail.
How can you keep grading costs down?
The biggest savings come from sending several cards at once and avoiding extra fees.
- Send several cards in one parcel. Postage is per parcel, so five cards cost about R26 each in postage instead of R130.
- Pack every card properly. A loose penny sleeve and a semi-rigid holder avoid the R50 re-sleeve fee. Our shipping and packing guide shows how.
- Collect in person. Collection is free in Swellendam or at an event where we have our stand, by arrangement, which saves the delivery fee. In Cape Town, you can also drop your cards off at our booth and skip postage.
- Grade the right cards. A card worth R150 raw rarely earns back R600 of grading. Chase cards, alt arts and vintage holos are the usual candidates, but check recent sold prices for the graded card first.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are there hidden fees?
Grading, the DHL share, estimated customs and VAT, and insurance are all shown at checkout. The later charges are delivery back to you and the R50 re-sleeve fee, which only applies to badly packed cards. One rare exception: if SARS imposes an unusual levy beyond the estimate, that's payable by you (our customs terms).
Why do I pay customs and VAT on my own cards?
Your cards come back from the UK as graded slabs, and SARS charges duty and VAT on the grading value when they re-enter South Africa. We estimate 20% duty plus 15% VAT on the R280 grading value and collect it at checkout. It isn't charged on freight or insurance.
Do I need to send 50 cards?
No. One card per order is fine. Your cards join a pooled batch with other collectors' cards, which is how the DHL cost is shared across 50 places.
Is postage to Cuppas Cards included?
No. You post your parcel to us in Swellendam yourself. Most customers use Pudo locker to door, which costs about R70.
Does the price change when the pound moves?
Not once you've paid. All our prices are in rands, and your price is fixed at checkout, even if the exchange rate changes before your cards are graded.
Ready to work out your own cost?
Add your cards on our submission page. The order summary shows your exact total, with customs, VAT and insurance added, before you pay.
