PCG vs PSA: What South African Collectors Should Know (2026)

If you collect Pokémon cards in South Africa, you've probably heard "just use PSA, it holds its value." That advice is partly true. It also skips the two things that hit South African collectors hardest: cost in rands and time away from your cards.

We're Cuppas Cards, and we send South African cards to PCG (Premier Card Grading) in the UK. We don't grade cards ourselves: PCG assigns every grade. So yes, we have a side in this. That's why every claim about PSA below links to a public source, and why we tell you where PSA wins too.

Why are collectors comparing PCG and PSA right now?

PSA paused its four cheapest grading tiers on 2 June 2026. Value Bulk, Value, Value Plus and Value Max closed to new submissions because of a backlog of about 10 million cards (ICv2, 29 May 2026). PSA said the tiers would return once the backlog falls to about 5 million cards.

The backlog has come down since, but slowly. PSA's public backlog tracker still showed more than 8 million cards in early October 2026.

In September, PSA added its own new Standard tier at $59.99 a card. It's quoted at 90 to 100 business days, and it's processed after existing Value and Bulk orders (Sports Illustrated Collectibles, 9 September 2026). For a South African collector, that's the cheapest way into PSA today.

What does grading cost from South Africa?

PCG through Cuppas Cards costs R495 per card before customs and insurance. PSA's cheapest open tier costs about R990 per card before any shipping at all.

PCG through Cuppas Cards

Our PCG Standard service uses PCG's £15 per-card tier, sent in pooled 50-card batches. Its R495 price is built from two parts:

  • R325 grading fee. That's PCG's £15 per card, converted to rands.
  • R170 courier share. One DHL round trip to the UK and back costs about R8,500 for a 50-card batch. Each card carries one fiftieth of it.

Two costs get added at checkout:

  • Customs and VAT, about R98 per card. That's an estimated 20% duty plus 15% VAT on R280, the grading value we declare to customs for each card. We collect it for SARS on the way back.
  • Insurance, 3% of your declared value. DHL charges 1% to insure the trip out, and 1% of double the declared value for the trip home.

So the service price is R495, R593 with customs, and R623 once insurance is added on a card declared at R1,000:

CostAmount
Grading fee (£15)R325
DHL round trip shareR170
Customs and VATR98
Insurance (R10 out, R20 back)R30
TotalR623

Local delivery back to you is billed once your order is done. For more worked examples, see our all-in grading cost breakdown. Pudo lockers start at R60, DHL door to door starts at R250, and collection in Swellendam is free.

PSA from South Africa

PSA's own Standard tier is $59.99 a card, and its Priority tier (formerly Regular) is $79 (Sports Illustrated Collectibles). At R16.46 to the dollar (Trading Economics, 19 October 2026), that's about R990 and R1,300.

Those are grading fees only. If the returned slabs face the same estimated 20% duty and 15% VAT we use, that adds about R345 to the R990 fee. So budget at least R1,335 a card on PSA's cheapest tier, before shipping, insurance and middleman fees. You still need to get your cards to PSA and back. PSA opened a grading centre in Frankfurt in September 2026, but it's set up for collectors across Europe (Sports Illustrated Collectibles). Many South African collectors use a local middleman instead, which adds its own fees (Rocket Grunt TCG, February 2026).

How long does each grader take?

Expect about 40 days from the day we ship your batch to PCG until your slabs are back in South Africa. PSA's cheapest tier quotes 90 to 100 business days for grading alone, which is about four to four and a half months.

Two honest notes on our side:

On PSA's side, Standard orders are graded after the existing Value and Bulk backlog. Priority is quoted at 70 to 80 business days. Express is quoted at 20 to 30 business days, but it costs $199 a card (Sports Illustrated Collectibles).

Does a PSA slab really sell for more?

Yes, usually, and you should factor that in. PSA 10s generally sell for more than the same card at other graders. Estimates of the gap vary a lot, though.

  • PokemonPriceTracker puts a modern PSA 10 at 5% to 10% over a CGC 10, and vintage at 20% to 30% (PokemonPriceTracker, April 2026).
  • PreGradeCards puts a PSA 10 at 10% to 30% over a CGC 10 (PreGradeCards, September 2026).

Neither source explains its method in detail, and neither covers PCG. There's very little public sales data for PCG slabs yet, so we won't claim they match PSA prices. If you're also weighing up CGC, our PCG vs CGC comparison covers its fees and turnaround from South Africa.

What this means in practice: the premium only pays off if the card is worth enough. A 10% premium on a R500 card is R50, which won't cover PSA's higher fees. On a R20,000 card, it's R2,000, and PSA may be the better choice. Our guide to PSA resale value works out the break-even point.

How do the grading scales compare?

PCG grades from 1 to 10 and scores four subgrades on every card: centering, corners, edges and surface (PCG FAQ). On the slabs we send for, all four are printed on the label. The final grade isn't a straight average, because some flaws affect eye appeal more than others.

PCG's top end splits into three grades: Flawless 10 (which gets PCG's Quad 10 label), Pristine 10 and Gem Mint 10. It also uses half grades such as 9.5, 8.5 and 7.5 (PCG FAQ).

PSA also grades from 1 to 10, but its standard labels show one overall grade without subgrades (PreGradeCards). With PCG, the printed subgrades show you why a card landed on a 9 instead of a 10.

A note on the name: Premier Card Grading is registered in New Zealand and runs regional offices, including England (PCG FAQ). Our South African cards go to PCG in the UK. For more on who PCG is and how its grades work, read what PCG is.

Should you choose PCG or PSA?

Choose PCG through Cuppas Cards if:

  • You want the lowest cost per card: about R593 plus 3% of the card's declared value, plus postage to us and local delivery back
  • You'd rather wait weeks than months
  • You want printed subgrades that show exactly how your card scored
  • You're grading cards for your own collection

Choose PSA if:

  • The card is worth thousands of rands and you plan to sell it
  • Your buyers specifically ask for PSA slabs
  • You're happy to pay more and wait longer for that resale premium

You can also use both: PSA for the one big chase card, PCG for everything else. For all five graders side by side, see our guide to choosing a card grading company from South Africa.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is PCG grading accepted in South Africa?

Yes. PCG slabs are bought and sold in South Africa, including at our own booth, and each one can be checked on PCG's population report. In our experience at events, PSA is still the name most buyers know, so some will prefer it.

How much does it cost to grade a Pokémon card in South Africa?

Through Cuppas Cards, PCG grading costs R495 per card, plus about R98 customs and VAT and 3% of the declared value for insurance. For a card declared at R1,000 that's R623, plus your postage to us and local delivery back.

Can I send cards to PSA directly from South Africa?

We couldn't find a PSA submission route set up for South Africa. PSA's newest grading centre, in Frankfurt, is aimed at European collectors (Sports Illustrated Collectibles). Many South Africans use a local middleman, which adds shipping and handling to PSA's fee.

How long does PCG take from South Africa?

We expect about 40 days from when your batch ships until your slabs are back in South Africa. Batches ship once 50 cards are in the pool, and we'll share real timings once our first batch returns.
